Monday morning I woke up with a pounding headache from a lack of sleep and an overwhelming amount of regret that weighed a ton sitting on my shoulders. I attempted to stop by the café for my coffee to avoid seeing Maggie, but they were closed due to a family emergency that felt a bit too convenient. It was like the universe was laughing in my face, knowing that I would either give in and go to Spill The Beans or dig my heels in and end up with a migraine.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see Maggie, I did. I wanted to pick up right where we’d left off before she uttered those words that sent me flying through her door.

Did I feel like a total prick for how I handled it? Yes.

Did she deserve better than that? Yes.

But at the end of the day, I was trying to do what I thought was best for everyone involved, including her. She had her whole life in front of her and should have someone who could give her more than I could, especially for her first time.

I’d been sitting at my desk for over an hour, staring at the cup of coffee I’d attempted to make this morning. It tasted like shit. There was nothing special about it, but even the regular black coffee that I got from Spill The Beans tasted better than this. It wasn’t that I didn’t know how to make coffee—I’d been doing it since I was old enough to make it for my grandpa. But something about this cup tasted more bitter than it should.

I answered a few emails and then jumped on to the Zoom meeting I had with my office in NYC. I was the last one to join, which wasn’t a big surprise given that I was moving slower than Leroy on a bad day.

“Alright, now that we’re ready to start,” Beverly said, pushing her glasses up her nose as she leaned in to read her computer screen. “Let’s begin with an update on the Hudson Creek project.”

She looked up and stared at the camera as Tim, a guy working out of our Idaho office, began talking about the progress of the development he’d been sent there to oversee. I tried to focus and pay attention, but every time I yawned, I found myself sinking a little lower in my chair.

Next up was an update from Ashley out of our main office. There were some budget details that didn’t impact me, so I tuned her out and waited until Beverly moved on to the next person. I was thankful that I didn’t have much that I needed to discuss and even more grateful that I was last on the agenda.

“I’m meeting with the mayor and city council tomorrow morning to discuss their decision on breaking ground on the vacant land between Whiskey Mountain and Fallen Oaks. I’ve also reached out to a referral that I had for local contractors in Fallen Oaks to see if they’d be on board for giving us a quote for the project.
